Programmed Initiative for Monga Eradication (PRIME)

GUK with the financial and technical assistance of DFID/PKSF has been implementing the “Programmed Initiative for Monga Eradication (PRIME)” project since 2007 to deal with the problems of ‘Monga’ that occurs between September and November each year in the northern part of the country. GUK launched PRIME in Polashbari & Sadullapur upazilla of Gaibandha district under 4 (four) branches covering 6 (six) unions.

The activities under PRIME include:

Collection of information about the socio-economic status of the ultra poor people.

Creation of job opportunities and self-employment of the ultra poor beneficiaries through the provision of microcredit support and IGA skill development training. Free inputs supply for home gardening, model IGA farm, observation of field day, bashok plantation, vermi compost production & assistance for marketing are the main activities for agriculture promotion.

Another component of the PRIME project is livestock development through distribution of goat/sheep & distribution of goat shed, cow shed, beef fattening shed, vaccination of goat/sheep, cow & dewarming tablet distribution for cattle health management.

Primary health care services is an important activity under PRIME project like conduction of health education & nutrition promotion sessions, pregnancy test, treatment of pregnant women, ante-natal, neonatal, post-natal, new born baby care, safe delivery by TBAs & institutional delivery by referring pregnant women to FWC, Upazilla Health Complex & govt. hospitals. Micro Nutrient Powder (MNP) sachets distribution is also and important activity under PRIME program. The Paramedics hold regular satellite clinics at different places where the Community Health Promoters refer patients for treatment. General health camps are held regularly where MBBS doctor treats patients and provide prescriptions and special health camps are held as per program/schedule where specialist doctors treat patients suffering from different chronic diseases.

Imparting IGA skill development training for homestead vegetable cultivation, year round crop cultivation, utilization of vermi compost through production, cow, goat, poultry & duck rearing, beef fattening, tailoring, knitting, handicrafts etc.
