Eye Hospital

Background:
Gram Unnayan Karma (GUK) is one of the Non-Governmental organizations (NGO) has been implementing different development activities since 1993 establishing its head office at Banani, Bogra with the objective of creating working scope of unemployed and disadvantaged poorest to the poor people in the community and ensure quality health care services specially eye care service and treatment to the eye patients at a minimum cost compared to other clinics & private hospital in Bangladesh. Considering the corporate social responsibility, the Founder Executive Director of GUK Khandaker Alamgir Hossain took the initiative to establish the GUK Eye Hospital in Bogra in order to provide quality eye care services to mass people, specially at a low cost for the disadvantaged  and under privileged people in January 2015. The eye hospital comprises a 2 storied building having space for outdoor & indoor  services. The 10 bedded hospital is well decorated with operation theater having modern equipment s, 3 eye specialists, trained doctors, nurses, paramedics, diagnostic laboratory along with medicine & optical shop. Besides the hospital clinical services, community eye camps are organized in a routine manner. As of June 2015 a total no. of 2131 patients with eye problems attended in OPD and 145 no. of patients were operated including Phaco, SICS, DCR, DCT, Pterygiun, Evisceration with implant. It is stated that in future the GUK pro-poor eye hospital will be a unique and modern eye hospital in Bogra as well as in the northern part of Bangladesh. Decision has been taken in the Executive Committee Meeting to start the Eye Hospital activities initially at a rented house and in the near future it will be shifted in its own building. At that time a full-fledged specialized GUK Eye & General hospital will be established which will run by specialist doctors & skilled manpower. 

Objective:
To provide special and qualitative eye care services/treatment to the poor patients with minimum cost.

Project activities:
1.General treatment: Eye specialist, eye surgeon, doctors, nurses are responsible for proper treatment/checkup of eye patients.
2.Lab technician: Skilled lab/pathology technicians are responsible for different pathological tests referred by doctors for investigation.
3.Surgery activities: Specialist Eye Surgeons are responsible to ensure proper operation of different categories of eye patients.
5.Waste management: Waste materials of General treatment, surgical treatment, pathological tests are burnt with scientific & environment friendly manner & final wastes are kept in the earmarked boxes in the protected area.  The waste management system has been established through a bi-lateral agreement with SAPNO having legal authority from Bogra Pouroshava & Department of Environment (DoE).

A Buniad Credit Borrower is taking care of her betel leaf field

Buniad (UPP):
GUK has been implementing its Buniad (UPP) from July 2004 with the financial and technical assistance of PKSF in 6 districts with a ceiling of loan BDT 25000. The main objective of this program is to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the ultra poor, illiterate and unemployed community people living below poverty level having no skill and access to resources by providing small loan and IGA based training. During the period under report a sum of BDT. 35,57,91,000/- has been disbursed among 22720 borrowers. Out of this BDT 12,45,47,000/- has been disbursed in agriculture sector among 7983 borrowers, BDT 10,67,37,000/- has been disbursed in livestock sector among 6671 borrowers & BDT 12,45,07,000/- has  been disbursed  in  other  sectors among 8066 borrowers. The cumulative loan amount disbursed up to the period under report is BDT 171,56,67,000/- among 173303 borrowers. Out of this BDT 60,04,83,000/- has been disbursed in agriculture sector among 60656 borrowers, BDT 514,47,48,000/- has been disbursed in livestock sector among 51990 borrowers, BDT 60,04,36,000/- has been disbursed in other sector (rural transport, land lease, handicrafts, small business, fisheries etc.) among 60657 borrowers.

Beggars Rehabilitation program:
To make Gabtali a bagger free union under Gabtali upazilla, Gram Unnayan Karma (GUK) with the financial & technical assistance of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) started implementing beggars rehabilitation program in the 1st phase by selecting 5 ultra poor & disable beggars during 20113-14 & in the 2nd phase by selecting another 5 beggars in 2014-15 for the rehabilitation by providing suitable income generating activities as they would be able to implement successfully. All the 10 beggars have been provided with BDT. 1 (one) lac each through handing over cheques to undertake suitable IGAs. The GUK officials & field staff have been closely supervising and ensuring efficient running of individual IGAs by the selected beggars and monitoring the progress of activities. Out of 10 beggars 10 have purchased milking cows with small land for fodder cultivation and earring daily income by selling milk, paddy cultivation, goat/sheep rearing. The main theme of this program is to eradicate begging profession from the society and as a model activity we highly expect that the ultimate goal will be achieved if this mission could be continued. In the cheque distribution ceremony Md. Mobarak Hossain Talukder, Consultant, Md. Khorshed Alam, Consultant,   Md.  Anisur  Rahman,   Deputy   Director  (Training),AHM Saiful Islam, Project Coordinator (ENRICH) & Md. Ataur Rahman, Zonal Manager, Gabtoli Zone were present & distributed cheques among the 5 beggars in the 2nd  phase. The other 4 (four) beggars also have started their income generating activities after receiving grant cheques amounting to BDT 1 (one) lac each.

GUK Shishu Bikash Education Program

Background:
Education is the backbone of a nation & a nation cannot prosper without proper education. Considering the importance of education in the way of overall development of a nation, Gram Unnayan Karma (GUK) has been implementing its non-formal primary education program since its inception by its own fund. Recently a decreasing tendency is being noticed from the side of donor agency in extending financial & technical assistance for promotion of primary education. Whereas the rate of literacy is yet to be increased with quality education facilities in the country. On the other hand mass people demand quality education for their children if necessary by sharing educational expenses. The existing number of Govt. Primary Schools is not enough to cover the growing number of school going children in rural & hard to reach remote areas. There is a high demand for quality education of school going children in remote areas without any compromise with the standard of education. On the basis of a feasibility study & the importance of increasing the rate of literacy, the management authority of GUK has taken the decision to run GUK Shishu Bikash Education Program with cost sharing basis for the dropped out & non school going children of the beneficiaries of GUK and other poor community households who are living in the very remote areas where density of population is comparatively higher than other areas & the distance of Govt. Primary school is far from the community. For achieving the cherished goal of the organization, GUK has already started Shishu Bikash Education Program initially in Bogra district as a piloting program & based on the results the program will be expanded gradually in the country with the financial & technical assistance of GUK itself, community contribution as well as Government and donor support.

Objectives of the program:

(1)To create scope for quality education for the dropped out & non school going children in the society.    

(2)To increase the rate of literacy.

(3)To reduce the dependency on house tutor by providing quality education in school.
(4)To complete the planned lessons during the class period which will reduce the dependency on house tutor.
(5)To give priority for admission of female students in the school.

(6)To provide stipend among the meritorious poor students.

(7)To create the scope of quality education for the dropped out and non school going children.
(8)To provide moral education along with government curriculum.
(9)To fill up the gap by opening GUK Shishu Bikash School where there is no Govt. Primary School.
(10)To run the education program on cost effective basis.
(11)To bring the non school going & dropped out children in the main stream of education.
(12)To ensure the standard of education in GUK Shishu Bikash Schools for getting GPA-5 by the students.
(13)To establish the spirit of ownership among the parents of the students of GUK Shishu Bikash Schools to make the program sustainable.
(14)To provide primary health care education among the students & parents by holding meetings & sessions.
(15)To enroll the parents for access to GUK financial services to undertake different IGAs as source of income earning.
(16)To create the employment opportunity for the teachers & staffs.

Management of program:
As per approved policy of the GUK Shishu Bikash Education Program all kinds of activities such as administrative management, financial management, staff recruitment, teacher recruitment, school selection, school opening, curriculum development, Supervision & monitoring, quality control, business plan, enrolment of students, fund management including all other initiatives will be a taken under the policy of GUK Shishu Bikash Education Program with the approval of Executive Director of GUK.

Present status of the education program:

  • From 1993 to June 2015 a total number of 4725 poor students completed their primary education under 135 non-formal education centers of GUK & now they are continuing their education in secondary schools.
  • 66 schools are running under GUK Shishu Bikash Education Program in different remote areas of Bogra district where 1980 dropped out and non school going children are getting education.

Message From Executive Director

It is a matter of great pleasure for me to inform you that Gram Unnayan Karma (GUK) has completed another successful year of 2014-2015 in its development endeavors towards achieving “Empowerment of the poor and ultra poor” within its operational areas. GUK has been implementing a handsome number of projects/Programs activities in its operational areas for poverty reduction and sustainable rural development since its inception. Realizing the need to complement the existing poverty reduction approaches of the government, GUK has been facilitating enabling environment to scale up social assistance interventions with community participation targeting poor and ultra poor who are considered to be most vulnerable and remain  dispossessed of basic living facilities and  unable to establish their rights in the society. At present GUK working areas have been expanded in 10 districts, 41 upazillas, 408 unions and over 3031 villages in the northern part of Bangladesh.

The major emphasis of GUK always goes for poverty alleviation, health, education promotion, employment generation, improvement of water and sanitation facilities, nutrition promotion, protection of women & children against violence and so on through project/Program interventions and social mobilization.

GUK believes that family is the main centre of all social development and accordingly gives emphasis on capacity building  of the poor and hard core poor through utilization of untapped local resources, skill development, awareness raising, advocacy, etc. for their economic emancipation for poverty alleviation.
I recall with admiration the dynamic role of PKSF, Bangladeshi Bank, JICA, EDGE, KATALYST, GETCO, European Union, DFID, M4C, WFP, World Bank, UNICEF, UNDP, HKI, IFPRI, Swisscontact, BRAC, RDA, GOB, Partner organization, Government officials, local government body members and all other well wishers for their continued cooperation, proper guidance, supports and technical assistance in the way of sustainable development.
